The Cross River State House of Assembly has suspended four councillors of Akpabuyo Legislative Council for 90 days over alleged misconduct and violent attack on the council leadership.
The affected councilors including Innocent Mbukpa, Patrick Eyo Etim, Bassey Effiom Edet and Tete Oyoyo Ubene, were suspended pending investigation by the House committee on public petitions and related matters.
Deputy Assembly Leader, Davies Etta, had raised a motion during plenary, alleging that the councillors used a cult group to intimidate and assault the leader of the legislature, Ekpo Bassey Ekpo.
Etta, who presented a petition on the floor, said the councillors attacked the leader and council staff on March 23, 2026, causing injuries and damaging property.
The assembly leader, Asuquo, condemned the action, describing it as an act of violence and a breach of due process.
Other lawmakers backed the motion, insisting the councillors should have sought redress through lawful means.
Speaker Elvert Ayambem expressed concern over the incident and reiterated the House’s commitment to peace and order.
