The researchers evaluated mortality rates from radiation-related cancers including multiple myeloma, leukemia (excluding chronic lymphocytic leukemia), lymphoma, central nervous system cancers, thyroid cancer, prostate cancer, melanoma, and non-melanoma skin cancers. Notably, lung cancer was excluded from this study to avoid confounding results related to smoking.
Alarmingly, pilots and flight attendants exhibited “statistically significantly” elevated mortality rates tied to breast cancer, central nervous system cancers, and melanoma.
