The Continental American Football League of Africa (CAFL) is to commence its Nigerian league in Makurdi, Benue State, in March 2027, with plans to establish a talent academy in the state at a later date
Commissioner of CAFL, an American entrepreneur, Muhammad El Muhammad, disclosed this in Makurdi at a press conference, where he said the league would provide a platform for Nigerians to participate in American football while creating opportunities for young talents
The cities to begin the league according to him include: Makurdi, Lagos, Ibadan, Ilorin, Abuja, Lafia, Lokoja, Kano, Kaduna, Jos, Enugu, Owerri, Asaba, Warri, Port-Harcourt, and Uyo
He said the decision to begin the Nigerian league in Benue was informed by the state’s abundance of sporting talents, adding that the academy, when established, would focus on identifying and developing hidden talents capable of representing Nigeria and Africa
El Muhammad, who is also founder of CAFL, noted that, the Benue State government has given its nod for the take-off of the league and would be expected to provide an enabling environment, including playing pitches and security, without direct financial assistance for the commencement of the programme
“Benue is a home of talents yet to be fully harnessed We want to tap into these talents for the good of the people and to enhance the economic well-being of families,” he said.
Also speaking, Director of Sports at the Benue State Sports Council, Dr Iorngurum Malu, commended CAFL for choosing Benue, saying Governor Hyacinth Alia was passionate about sports and would provide an environment conducive to the success of the initiative
