California Jury Awards $19.3 Million in Civil Suit
In a landmark ruling, a California jury has ordered comedian Bill Cosby to pay a substantial sum to a woman who accused him of sexual assault.
The case, centered on events that allegedly occurred over 50 years ago, saw Donna Motsinger testify about her harrowing experience.
Motsinger, now 84, claimed that Cosby targeted her when she was a young waitress. The court heard that Cosby visited her workplace and later picked her up in his limousine, offering her a glass of wine and a pill he claimed was aspirin.
She recounted losing consciousness and waking up at home, partially undressed, with the realization that she had been assaulted.
Despite Cosby's attorneys arguing that any sexual contact was consensual, the jury sided with Motsinger, awarding her $19.3 million in damages, which may increase with punitive damages.
A Pattern of Misconduct
This case is not an isolated incident. Cosby, once a beloved figure in American entertainment, has faced numerous accusations of sexual misconduct spanning decades.
In 2022, a jury in the same courthouse ordered Cosby to pay damages to Judy Huth, who accused him of molestation when she was just 16 years old.
Cosby served time in prison for a separate criminal case in Pennsylvania, where he was convicted of drugging and molesting a woman. His release in 2021 was due to a technicality, not an exoneration.
The allegations against Cosby have had a profound impact, with dozens of women coming forward to share similar stories of assault and drugging, casting a long shadow over his once-celebrated career.
