German champions Bayern Munich scored two late goals to claim a comeback 4-3 win over ten-man Real Madrid in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday night, to seal the tie 6-4 on aggregate.
Vincent Kompany’s side survived conceding less than one minute into the encounter, and had to come from behind thrice to end Real Madrid’s one-sided dominance in the meetings between both sides.
Arda Guler had not scored in the UCL this season but the Turkish midfielder pounced on an error to loop home the opener on 45 seconds but Aleksander Pavlovic equalized on five minutes. The relentless encounter saw Guler score a direct free-kick to restore Real’s lead midway into the half, but Harry Kane made it 2-2 with his 50th strike of the season. Kylian Mbappe returned to the scoresheet late in the half when he finished off a counter attack to slot home his 40th goal of the season, handing Real a 3-2 lead at halftime.
More drama ensued in the second half when a profligate Real Madrid were let down by substitute Eduardo Camavinga who picked up two yellow cards within minutes to reduce Alvaro Arbeloa’s side to ten men, and Bayern fully capitalized with two late goals.
Diaz powered home a curler from the edge of the area into the top corner to equalize, and Michael Olise sealed the win with a shot into the top corner to seal the 4-3 win.
Bayern Munich, with their first home and away win over Real Madrid in 25 years, also exerting a revenge for their 2024 elimination. They will met Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-final, while Arsenal, who drew 0-0 for a 1-0 aggregate win over Sporting Lisbon will face Ademola Lookman’s Atletico Madrid.
