A local hunter in the early hours of Sunday mobilised residents to apprehend two men allegedly attempting to steal solar streetlights along the Bulou-Orua–Ebedebiri Road in Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
The suspects, who had been handed over to police operatives for further investigation and prosecution, are currently in custody at the Police Command Headquarters in Yenagoa.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Musa Mohammed, confirmed the arrest, noting that the hunter caught the suspects in the act and raised the alarm.
He identified the suspects as Ayebademone Peremobowei and Peres John, said to be from nearby Tungbo town in the same local government area.
Residents told Daily Trust that more than 100 solar streetlights installed by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) have been stolen, leaving many communities in darkness and slowing development.
However, vandalism and theft of public infrastructure, including solar streetlights, remain recurring challenges in the area.
