A Groundbreaking Achievement
The 98th Academy Awards witnessed a groundbreaking moment as Autumn Durald Arkapaw became the first female cinematographer to win the coveted Best Cinematography Oscar.
Her win for the film 'Sinners' not only marked a personal triumph but also a significant milestone for diversity in the industry, as she is the first woman of color to receive this honor.
In an emotional acceptance speech, Arkapaw expressed her gratitude to the women who have supported her throughout her career, inviting them to stand and be recognized for their contributions to the field.
Breaking Barriers
Arkapaw's achievement is especially remarkable considering the category's history. Prior to her win, only three women had been nominated in this category: Rachel Morrison, Ari Wegner, and Mandy Walker.
Arkapaw's work on 'Sinners' also made her the first female cinematographer to shoot on IMAX 65mm and Ultra Panavision.
She thanked director Ryan Coogler for his trust and belief in her talent, highlighting the collaborative nature of their work.
A Night of Success for 'Sinners'
The 2026 Oscars celebrated the success of 'Sinners' with multiple wins. Michael B. Jordan won Best Actor, joining an elite group of Black actors with this honor. Ryan Coogler's win for Best Original Screenplay made him only the second Black writer to achieve this feat.
With 16 nominations, 'Sinners' set a record for the most nominations for a single film, ultimately winning four Oscars. The film's critical acclaim and commercial success, with a global gross of $368 million, solidify its place as a cinematic landmark.
