Mikel Arteta Urges Arsenal to Play with Passion
Mikel Arteta has issued an impassioned call for Arsenal to bring “pure fire” to their crucial Champions League showdown against Sporting Lisbon as they seek to rebound from recent setbacks.
As the team heads into the quarter-final second leg at the Emirates Stadium, they hold a slim 1-0 advantage following last week's encounter in Lisbon. Should they consolidate this lead, Arsenal will secure a spot in the semi-finals of the prestigious tournament for the second consecutive year.
Despite this commanding position, the Gunners have struggled in their last four matches, claiming only one win alongside three disheartening losses. These results have ignited discussions among fans and commentators about the team’s ability to withstand pressure at a critical juncture in the season.
“There is no fear. Pure fire. That’s it. Me, the first one. Pure fire. That’s what I want to see on the players, on the people, on myself,” Arteta stated during his pre-match press conference. “Fire! I’m on fire. I’m on fire. That’s it. Nothing else. I’m dreaming so much. I’ve done so much to be in this position because I know how this club was. I’ve done so much and this is beauty.”
The manager's fervor comes after a disappointing League Cup final loss to Manchester City and a disheartening FA Cup quarter-final elimination by second-tier Southampton. Most alarming was Saturday's surprising 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth at home in the Premier League, raising serious questions about Arsenal's fortitude under pressure.
Currently, the Gunners find themselves just six points ahead of second-placed Manchester City, who have a game in hand and will host Arsenal in a monumental clash on Sunday. The pressure mounts as Arsenal has finished as Premier League runners-up for the past three seasons, having squandered significant leads against City in both 2023 and 2024.
Adding to their woes, Arsenal has not lifted a trophy since winning the FA Cup in 2020, which remains Arteta’s sole silverware after more than six years in management. This prolonged drought has stirred a sense of unease among the fanbase, as history seems to repeat itself.
In response, Arteta passionately defended his team. “We are in April, we have an incredible opportunity ahead of us. Let’s confront it, let’s go for it by really putting absolutely everything into it,” he emphasized. “I want to get it done for all these people that have been in this journey with us. And because they deserve it, because it’s been unbelievable. That’s what is driving me every single day. I have zero fear.”
Arsenal has not claimed the Premier League title since 2004 and is yet to taste success in the Champions League. Reaching the semi-finals this season would mark a significant achievement, being the first time in the club’s history that they would progress to the last four in consecutive seasons.
Arteta, whose squad faced a defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in last year’s semi-finals, acknowledged the monumental task ahead as they aim for both Premier League and Champions League glory. “What we are trying to achieve is difficult, challenging, and it’s supposed to be like this,” he noted.
“I said to the players, ‘Guys, we are trying to do something that hasn’t been done in the history of the club in 140 years. So that tells you the difficulty of what you are doing.’” He added, “We have the opportunity tomorrow to go to the semi-finals. We are competing to win the Premier League, and we are in a really strong position. So the team is doing something incredible because it’s never been done before.”
