Fast-rising Nollywood actress and producer Uche ‘Montana’ Nwaefuna delivered one of the most inspiring moments of the 12th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards after she was named winner of the prestigious Trailblazer Award on Saturday night.
An emotional Montana fought back tears as she accepted the honour, dedicating the award to young girls across Africa and urging them not to give up on their dreams.
“God decided to show up. This is for every young girl out there: keep dreaming, keep believing. If you’re told no, don’t stop; keep going. Thank you, thank you, Africa,” the 32-year-old said to loud applause from the audience.
The heartfelt speech was one of the standout moments of the evening, as the actress became visibly overwhelmed with emotion. Her on-screen mother, Blessing Onwukwe, later joined her on stage for a touching celebration, drawing cheers from guests and viewers.
The Trailblazer Award is one of Africa Magic’s and MultiChoice’s most significant honorary recognitions.
It is presented annually to emerging talents who have made a remarkable impact in African film and television and who are considered to be shaping the future of the industry.
Montana’s victory came as a surprise to some, as she was not nominated in any of the competitive categories this year. However, the honour reflected her rapid rise in Nollywood and the growing influence she has built both as an actress and as an independent producer.
Her recognition follows the massive success of her self-produced YouTube film, Monica, and its sequel, Monica 2, which became digital sensations and attracted over 10 million views within days of release.
The popularity of the films transformed Montana into one of the most talked-about actresses of the year, with fans affectionately referring to her as “Monica”, a nickname inspired by her standout role in the series.
The success of the Monica franchise also highlighted a growing trend in Nollywood, where filmmakers are increasingly turning to digital platforms such as YouTube to distribute their work directly to audiences across Africa and around the world.
Born on May 8, 1997, in Lagos, Montana began her acting career in 2015 with a minor role in Poison Ivy.
She gained widespread recognition for her portrayal of Lovina in the hit television drama Hush, a performance that earned her the MAYA Awards Africa prize for Best Supporting Actress in a TV Series.
Since then, she has built an impressive body of work, appearing in more than 100 films and establishing herself as one of Nollywood’s most versatile talents. In addition to acting, she has expanded into screenwriting, production and digital content creation through her own media platform.
Her recent projects include Thin Line, The Silent Intruder, The Other Woman, Nine Months to Forever and A Place with You.
By winning the Trailblazer Award, Montana joins a distinguished list of previous recipients recognised for their exceptional promise and influence in African cinema.
