Nigerian sprinters, Tobi Amusan and Rosemary Chukwuma, both won gold in their respective events at the ongoing African Senior Athletics Championships in Ghana.
World record holder Amusan dominated the 100m hurdles event to claim gold and continue her dominance of the event, while Chukwuma claimed gold in the 100m dash at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium on Wednesday.
Both medals are the first two gold medals won at the ongoing championships that is in its second day.
Amusan, however, won her third 100m hurdles gold, and sixth gold across events in the championship’s history.
The US-based athlete stormed ahead of the pack midway into the race to claim the convincing win, with her compatriot Adaobi Tabugbo taking bronze medal with a third place finish.
Chukwuma, however, celebrated her first ever gold at the championships by holding off Cameroon’s Heverge Etame Kole, and Libria’s Thelma Davies.
The sprinter ensured the 100m women’s event remains under Nigeria’s dominance with the victory. She also joins an elite group of African athletes who have won the 100m sprint at youth, junior, and senior categories in Africa.
She won youth gold in 2018, while the junior gold followed at Abidjan 2019. Nigeria has won four medals so far at the ongoing African Senior Athletics Championships, including a silver and bronze medals alongside the gold medals.
