Alex Iwobi Honoured for Groundbreaking Community Leadership
In a landmark announcement, Nigeria international Alex Iwobi has etched his name into history, becoming the first Nigerian ever to be recognised on the prestigious 2025 Football Black List. The 29-year-old Fulham and Super Eagles midfielder has been lauded not just for his prowess on the pitch, but for his profound and transformative impact off it, particularly through his dedicated community-focused initiatives.
What is the Football Black List?
Established in 2008 by the UK-based publication, The Voice, the Football Black List is an annual accolade celebrating individuals of Black heritage who are driving positive change within the sport and wider society. It shines a light on outstanding Black players, coaches, executives, media professionals, and community leaders whose efforts extend beyond the boundaries of the football field.
Iwobi's Impactful Initiatives: Project 17 and AleXpress
Iwobi’s inclusion in the coveted players’ category stems directly from his visionary leadership and commitment to social upliftment. He founded Project 17, an initiative meticulously designed to empower young people and provide crucial support to underserved communities. Through Project 17, Iwobi has spearheaded various impactful programmes:
- Organised Football Tournaments: Creating platforms for engagement, talent development, and community bonding.
- Mentorship Programmes: Guiding and inspiring the next generation with invaluable life skills and career advice.
- 'AleXpress' Outreach Efforts: Directly engaging with communities to deliver support and foster positive connections.
The organisers of the Football Black List highlighted that Iwobi’s selection reflects their conviction that he has admirably demonstrated leadership by leveraging his prominent platform “to create lasting social impact and foster positive change in society.”
A Pioneer Among Peers
Iwobi joins a distinguished group of individuals recognised in the players’ category for 2025, including:
- Eberechi Eze (Arsenal)
- Jess Carter
- Naomi Bedeau
- Shakira Waithe
Furthermore, the list also acknowledged other influential figures across different categories. Former Ivory Coast international Kolo Touré, currently serving as a first-team assistant coach at Manchester City, received recognition in the coaching and management category for his contributions.
A Career of Excellence On and Off the Pitch
While his recent recognition highlights his off-field achievements, Iwobi also boasts an impressive professional playing career. Having made nearly 400 Premier League appearances across his spells with top clubs like Arsenal, Everton, and Fulham, he has contributed significantly with 43 goals and 51 assists, cementing his reputation as a versatile and impactful midfielder in English football.
