A Bold Call for Unity Amidst Opposition Turmoil
As Nigeria gears up for the 2027 general elections, the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) has made a significant overture, urging prominent opposition leaders to set aside differences and unite under its banner. The call, spearheaded by Mr. James Adeshina, the Lagos State Chairman of the PRP, comes at a critical juncture for the nation’s political landscape, particularly in the wake of escalating leadership crises within rival opposition parties.
Mr. Adeshina specifically extended an invitation to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Mr. Peter Obi, and Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso, emphasizing the urgent need for a cohesive front to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy.
ADC's Leadership Crisis: A Wake-Up Call for Opposition
The PRP's appeal is a direct response to the deepening leadership crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a platform that had recently attracted significant opposition figures eyeing the 2027 polls. Mr. Adeshina, a former Lagos State Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) Chairman, characterized the renewed ADC internal strife as a severe threat to opposition cohesion and the broader democratic fabric.
The Imminent Threat to Democracy
“Nigeria’s political landscape is once again witnessing turbulence—this time within the African Democratic Congress (ADC),” Adeshina stated. “What should have been a strong alternative platform is now entangled in internal disputes, leadership struggles, and uncertainty.”
He further elaborated on the far-reaching consequences of such fragmentation:
- It creates room for unchecked dominance by the ruling party.
- It fuels the growing fear of Nigeria sliding toward a one-party state.
- It weakens the collective ability of opposition forces to provide credible alternatives to the populace.
The severity of the ADC’s predicament was highlighted recently when the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) de-recognized the party’s National Chairman, David Mark, and National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, among others, citing a court order.
PRP: A Stable, Historically Grounded Alternative
In contrast to the internal wrangling plaguing parties like the ADC and potentially the PDP, Adeshina championed the PRP as a credible, stable, and ideologically consistent alternative. He asserted that the current disarray demands bold, decisive action from opposition leaders.
Why PRP Says It's the Answer
“I therefore extend a sincere invitation to key figures and stakeholders within ADC and beyond—leaders such as Atiku Abubakar, Rauf Aregbesola, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso and others—to approach PRP,” Adeshina urged.
He outlined the PRP's distinct advantages:
- Longevity and Stability: PRP remains the oldest political party in Nigeria, boasting a consistent legacy of discipline, unity, and ideological focus.
- Internal Harmony: It has operated without the kind of internal rancour that has plagued many other parties, offering a rare bastion of stability.
- Ideological Foundation: With 47 years of existence, PRP stands on a strong, consistent ideology.
“The truth is simple: Nigeria does not need multiple weak opposition parties; it needs one strong, united force capable of challenging the status quo and restoring balance to the political system,” Adeshina affirmed.
A Call to Preserve Ideals and Secure the Future
Adeshina views the ongoing ADC crisis not merely as a setback, but as a crucial wake-up call for leaders and stakeholders to transcend party loyalty and embrace a broader national agenda. He emphasized the necessity to consolidate strengths rather than scatter them.
“To the leaders affected, this is not about abandoning your ideals—it is about preserving them in a more viable structure,” he passionately stated. “It is about ensuring that your vision for Nigeria does not get lost in internal conflicts or political fragmentation.”
The PRP chairman expressed strong optimism regarding the party’s electoral prospects, believing that a united opposition under the PRP platform could secure both the 2027 presidential election and the Lagos State governorship.
“To Nigerians watching from all corners, the message is equally clear: unity among credible leaders is the pathway to national redemption,” Adeshina concluded. “History will not remember the parties we defended—it will remember the country we saved. The time to act is now. The opportunity to unite is here. And the platform that offers stability, legacy, and direction remains the PRP. Let us come together—before it is too late.”
