Labour Party Eyes Southern Candidate for 2027 Presidential Race
As activities intensify in anticipation of the 2027 general elections, Nigeria's Labour Party (LP) has made a definitive declaration, officially zoning its presidential ticket exclusively to the southern region of the country. This pivotal decision was announced by the party's National Caretaker Committee Chairman, Nenadi Usman, following a crucial meeting with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja on Tuesday.
No Northern Aspirants for LP's 2027 Presidential Ticket
Chairman Usman was unequivocal in her statement, clarifying the party's firm stance on candidate eligibility for the upcoming polls.
- "We have one certain decision that we have taken, and that is that we will certainly not field any aspirant from Northern Nigeria," Usman declared.
- "We have zoned the position to southern Nigeria. So if any northerner comes now to want to contest elections, we certainly will not accept that."
This resolute pronouncement sets a clear geographical boundary for potential candidates aspiring to fly the LP flag in the next presidential cycle, aiming to ensure fairness and regional balance within the party's top leadership.
Upholding Internal Democracy Amidst Membership Surge
Despite the definitive zoning, Usman emphatically stressed the party's unwavering commitment to its internal democratic processes. She firmly declined to name any potential candidate, reinforcing that the ultimate choice would emerge from the will of the party members through primary elections.
"As for who, I can’t tell you now because then it won’t be democratic anymore. Whoever the people like and vote for during the primaries… could be the candidate," the former Minister of Finance asserted.
Usman also cast a positive light on the party's prospects for the 2027 elections, revealing a significant surge in membership. This unprecedented growth, she indicated, might necessitate a strategic review of the dates for LP’s upcoming congresses to ensure broader participation and prevent disenfranchisement.
"If we go ahead to stick to that date, to my mind, we are going to disenfranchise quite a number of people," she explained, signaling a proactive approach to accommodate the expanding party base and strengthen its democratic foundations.
Zoning: A Principle of Equity and Historical Precedent
While the concept of zoning is not explicitly enshrined in Nigeria’s constitution, it remains a widely adopted practice among various political parties, including the Labour Party. This approach is typically driven by a commitment to fostering equity and fairness across the nation's diverse geopolitical landscape.
This latest decision by the Labour Party mirrors similar strategies employed in the lead-up to the 2023 general elections. During that electoral cycle:
- Both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Labour Party had strategically zoned their presidential tickets to the South.
- Conversely, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) opted for an open contest, allowing eligible presidential aspirants from any region to compete for its ticket.
The fiercely contested 2023 elections ultimately saw former Vice President Atiku Abubakar emerge as the PDP flagbearer, while ex-Anambra State governor Peter Obi clinched the LP ticket. Former Lagos State governor Bola Tinubu secured the APC ticket and was subsequently declared the winner of the presidential poll, with Atiku placing second and Obi trailing behind.
