Leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the six local governments in Kwara South Senatorial District have thrown their weight behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.
They simultaneously backed a shift in the governorship to Kwara North and expressed preference for speaker of the state assembly, Salihu Danladi Yakubu.
The twin resolutions were adopted at a Mega Rally of party stakeholders held in Ajase-Ipo, Irepodun Local Government Area, where political leaders across the southern axis converged to take a position ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Presenting the position of the stakeholders, a retired Director of the National Institute for Cultural Orientation, Ibrahim Lawal, said the endorsement of Tinubu was informed by the “early gains of the administration’s policy direction.
“We endorse the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the 2027 election. The second term of President Tinubu is necessary to consolidate the structural reforms of the Renewed Hope Agenda, which have already begun to yield measurable economic and infrastructural gains,” he said.
He said the agitation for the power shift to Kwara North was to balance the power rotation in the state for equity and inclusiveness.
Lawal said the demand reflects long-standing concerns over representation and fairness in the state’s political leadership.
“Since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999, the governorship of Kwara State has been largely dominated by Kwara Central, which has held the office for about 20 of the last 27 years,” he said.
He explained that while Kwara South had governed the state for eight years under Abdulfatah Ahmed, Kwara North has yet to produce a governor in the current democratic dispensation.
“Kwara Central has produced three of the four democratically elected governors since 1999, while Kwara North has not produced a governor in the state’s 27 years democratic history,” he added.
According to him, the call for a shift is anchored on the principles of equity and inclusion.
“The resolve for the governorship to shift to Kwara North is to ensure inclusion, equity, justice and fairness among the three senatorial districts,” Lawal stated.
The Deputy Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Ojo Oyebode, moved a motion at the rally supporting the transfer of the governorship to Kwara North.
The move received widespread backing from party stakeholders in attendance who also reaffirmed their support for Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq with a vote of confidence in his leadership and ongoing development efforts in the state.
Speakers at the rally, including former local government chairmen Joshua Omokanye and Wasiu Bamidele, commended the governor for projects executed in their areas, describing them as impactful and people-driven.
They also expressed support for the President’s policies, assuring that the people of the zone would stand firmly behind Tinubu in the 2027 elections.
