APC Dominance: Sule Dismisses ADC as a 'Negligible' Threat
Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has downplayed the rising profile of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), labeling it a minor political entity that poses no significant threat to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming 2027 general elections. Speaking during a recent appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Sule argued that the APC's vast administrative reach makes it untouchable by opposition parties lacking a grassroots footprint.
Responding to claims that the ADC is emerging as the primary opposition platform, Sule noted that such political narratives are often transient. "At one point, they said the PDP is the strongest opposition to our party, so now it is the ADC. You’ll continue to hear this goalpost keep moving," he remarked. He highlighted the disparity in political power, stating that a party controlling 31 states has no reason to fear one that does not control a single state.
State Policing: A United Front Against Insecurity
Beyond partisan politics, Governor Sule addressed the pressing issue of national security, which remains a central theme for opposition campaigns. Despite criticisms of the current administration’s security record, Sule expressed confidence in state policing as the definitive structural response to the banditry and terrorism plaguing the nation.
The governor revealed significant progress at the policy level, noting that the National Economic Council (NEC) has seen nearly unanimous support for decentralized policing. According to Sule, 35 out of 37 governors (including the FCT) have already signed off on the initiative.
- Legislative Process: The policy currently awaits constitutional amendments and approval from the National Assembly and various state assemblies.
- State Readiness: Nasarawa is among the states strongly advocating for the immediate implementation of the system to protect local communities.
- Consensus: Sule emphasized that the current delay is merely procedural, asserting that the political will to reform the security architecture is stronger than ever.
The Shifting Political Landscape
While Governor Sule maintains a confident stance for the APC, the ADC continues to position itself as a formidable alternative to the status quo. The party has recently attracted a wave of high-profile defectors from across the political spectrum, aiming to capitalize on public concerns regarding the economy and security.
However, for the Nasarawa governor, the path to 2027 remains anchored in the APC's existing infrastructure. He maintains that while the opposition may gain headlines, the ruling party's control over the majority of the states remains the ultimate barometer of political strength in Nigeria.
