A woman who recently returned from the United Kingdom to attend a wedding in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has died in a road accident along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The spokesperson of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, said the crash occurred on Monday night near the Christopher University axis of the expressway.
He explained that the deceased was travelling in a white Toyota Camry with two other occupants when the vehicle collided with a truck.
According to him, the impact of the crash claimed her life, while the other passengers—a man and a woman—sustained injuries.
Eyewitnesses attributed the accident to excessive speed, alleging that the Camry rammed into a moving truck.
Akinbiyi added that preliminary findings indicated that the two female occupants had just arrived from the United Kingdom and were on their way to Abeokuta for a wedding.
“The injured passengers were rushed to Famobis Hospital and Redeemed Hospital, while the deceased was deposited at the Redeemed Hospital morgue,” he said.
Meanwhile, four people were killed in another road accident at the Ijebu-Imushin axis of the Ijebu Ode-Ore Expressway.
The crash, which also occurred on Monday night, involved a white Toyota Hiace bus (BDJ 482 XC) and a blue MAN diesel truck (RSH 969 XC).
It was gathered that the truck was being towed when the towing chain snapped, after which the speeding bus rammed into it.
Following the collision, the driver of the towing vehicle fled the scene, leaving the truck behind.
The Public Relations Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun Sector Command, Odunsi Afolabi, confirmed the incident.
He blamed the crash on speeding, noting that all occupants died at the scene.
“Regrettably, all four individuals involved in the crash—two male adults and two female adults—sustained fatal injuries and were confirmed dead at the scene.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the crash was caused by speed violation,” he said.
Afolabi added that the corpses were deposited at the State Hospital mortuary in Ijebu Ode, while the police had taken custody of the vehicles for further investigation.
In Ibadan, Oyo State, three persons were feared dead and several others injured after a heavy-duty trailer reportedly suffered brake failure and crashed into road users.
The incident occurred as the articulated vehicle was descending from Beere Roundabout after passing through Oja’Oba.
Sources said the driver lost control after the trailer developed a mechanical fault and failed brakes as it approached Beere Junction.
The vehicle subsequently rammed into cars, commercial motorcycles and pedestrians, causing widespread destruction.
The worst impact was recorded in the Iso-Osan area, popularly known as Orange Market, where property was damaged and several victims were critically injured.
Witnesses described scenes of panic as people scrambled for safety while others were caught in the path of the out-of-control trailer.
Emergency responders and security personnel later arrived at the scene to evacuate victims, restore order and manage traffic.
Also, three people were confirmed dead and 10 others injured in a lone crash in Bara, along the Bauchi-Gombe Federal Highway.
The accident occurred on Monday and involved a Toyota Hiace bus conveying members of the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) from Taraba State, who were returning from an evangelism outreach.
According to a road traffic report by the FRSC RS12.15 Bara Unit Command, the crash occurred at Tumfere-Lakau at about 11.30am and was reported 10 minutes later.
FRSC personnel arrived at the scene at about 11.52am.
The vehicle, with registration number KWL-03HC, was driven by Emmanuel Kwata.
The FRSC attributed the crash to a tyre burst.
A total of 13 persons were involved—10 male adults and three female adults.
“Ten persons sustained injuries—nine male adults and one female adult—while three victims, one male and two female adults, lost their lives,” the report said.
The injured were rescued by an FRSC team and taken to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, for treatment.
