The stage is set for the 2026 World Cup following the completion of the last group of qualifiers early Wednesday, as Iraq piped Bolivia to the last qualification ticket with a 2-1 win in the intercontinental playoffs in Mexico.
We run through the 48 nations expected in the expanded World Cup set for USA, Canada and Mexico based on their various continents, including the four debutants who will bring the total of World Cup participants since inception in 1930 to 85 countries.
Argentina leads the Americas
The Albiceleste are reigning champions of the world. Captained by 38 years old Lionel Messi, Argentina will lead 12 nations – including three co-hosts USA, Mexico, and Canada – from the Americas to the tournament. Brazil, Colombia, and Uruguay are potent supporting casts, while minnows Panama, Haiti, and Curacao will also be present.
The Americas’ representatives: Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Canada, Mexico, United States, Ecuador, Paraguay, Uruguay, Panama, Curaçao, Haiti.
Sixteen (16) nations will be representing the continent with the highest number of countries (five) with a World Cup trophy, and the total number of trophies won (12). France will lead other super-powers Germany, Spain, Portugal, England, and Netherlands to the tournament. Others in the legion are Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Norway, Scotland, and Switzerland.
The continent will be represented by 10 countries for the first time, and the duo of Morocco and Senegal looked primed to shock the world. These competent Warriors are in the top 15 of FIFA world ranking, and they will be supported by Algeria, Cape Verde, Egypt, Ghana, Ivory Coast, South Africa, Tunisia, and DR Congo on the quest for a first-ever World Cup winner on the continent.
Japan and South Korea are serial tough opponents for elite football nations, and these Asian tigers will lead an ambush of nine nations that also includes Australia, Iran, Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan, and Iraq.
Oceania’s lone representative
New Zealand carries the hope of the Oceania confederation with its first-ever direct qualification. Set to appear in a third World Cup, they showed great distinction as the only undefeated nation in 2010, but have never won a match or scale through the group phase.
The 2026 world cup welcomes four new debutants including Curacao, Cape Verde, Uzbekistan, and Jordan. Curacao’s Dutch connection and blend of European players could create ripples in the tournament, and same could be said of the others who have players in reputable and top European clubs. A maiden win for these debutants would be a celebration back home.
